Akers' No-No Highlights Saturday Sweep
STARKVILLE - Starkville junior poitcher Will Akers tossed a no-hitter to highlight a Saturday sweep by the Yellow Jackets on Saturday at Carlisle Stadium.
The Jackets, who have won five in a row, blanked Neshoba Central, 3-0, to start the day and topped Grenada, 4-2 in the final game of the day on Yellow Jacket Field.
Akers, a righty, grounded the Rockets for seven innings with seven strikeouts and did not issue a walk. The pair of Rockets that reached base were on SHS miscues in the field, but Akers was able to work around the errors. SHS's defense also aided his bid for a no hitter with great defensive plays behind him.
SHS put the first run on the board with a bases-loaded walk by Kaden Wilson in the second inning. The Jackets handed Akers some insurance with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Senior Will Moody scored on a wild pitch. Senior Tyson Knox recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the frame.
In the Grenada contest, the Jackets scored a run in three consecutive innings to break a 1-1 tie and extend the lead with a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Moody, senior Torian Knox, Tyson Knox and sophomore Taj Prater all had hits in the contest. Tyson Knox and Prater delivered an RBI. Knox posted an RBI single in the sixth follwing Prater's run-scoring double in the fifth.
Moody went 6.0 innings on the mound, scattering six Charger hits and collectibng four strikeouts. He did not issue a walk in the outing. Wilson finished the game with the tying runs on base.
The Jackets begin Region 2 action on Tuesday against Madison Central at Carlisle Stadium.
